I had the best Grandma! I was blessed to be loved by her. I remember when she would talk to me about the stars and constellations at night, her love of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals; especially the Sound of Music. I remember when she would take us to see the owls in her trees, discover the snakes in her yard, hold the baby chicks and eventually go out with her to the coop to get their eggs once they were grown. I remember how she wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She would chop the heads off those chickens and then pull their guts out when it was butchering time. I couldn’t believe Grandma would put her hand in a dead chicken! Gross!! I also remember hating planting that huge garden of hers and hauling the potatoes back to the house when we harvested it, but loved that it brought all of us together. I remember that no one baked like grandma. She made the BEST cheesecakes, brownies and cookies, especially her Christmas shortbread cookies…..mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, the list was never ending. I’ll remember the smell of her house when she would make toast for us in the morning and how she always kept cereal for us on top of the fridge when we didn’t want toast. She’d always have a stash of juice boxes in the cellar or fridge or a pop if we were really good! I remember Christmases at Grandma’s and the stockings that she glitter glued all of our names onto and how those stockings would be filled with her homemade turtles and other chocolates. I remember taking drives with her out to the fields to deliver the lunches to all the hard workers out there. I remember how she’d give us goosebumps when she told her ghost stories. I’ll remember how determined she was to find coins for all of her grandchilren for the coin collections that she put together for each of us.
Most of all though I’m going to remember her hugs, her smile, her laugh and the way she used us rock us in the rocking chair and sing to us when we needed our Grandma.
We love and miss you very much Grandma and we will always remember you.
