Isabel was born October 28th, 1936 in Monitor, Alberta to parents Bennett and Isabel Douglas.
Isabel was raised in Monitor area on a small farm with five brothers. She loved small farm life growing up. Mom often spoke of riding her Shetland pony to school as a child, to this day Mom loved horses (one of her favorite animals). Mom enjoyed the small country school, she often spoke of the grade 1-9 country school and how all the older children would help with the younger children. As a young girl Mom contracted Polio, (this is how her brother Kenneth passed), her and her youngest brother Dennis were quarantined in a Hospital in Banff. Although this was a difficult time, Mom said she was glad that her and Dennis were there together, it was a sense of family for both (and she could care for her little brother).
Mom met the love of her life Grant Buchanan at a box social in Consort, Alberta. They were married June 2nd, 1956, and to this union were born five daughters. Through the years Mom and Dad lived in various places: Calgary, Consort, Crossfield, Prebo, Galahad, and the Buchanan family, final destination, Alliance. After Dad’s passing Mom moved to Castor. She first lived in the Manor, then moved to the Paintearth Lodge for the last 10 months of her life. Isabel loved Castor, she liked the amenities, and how friendly the people were, she also loved the Lodge staff (particularly Brenda), they all became like family to her; she called the staff her kids! Mom enjoyed drawing through the years and did some etching on glass. She loved playing cards and enjoyed family time. For so many years in Alliance, she and dad hosted the Father’s Day Picnic. Mom kept her yard beautifully. She loved her flowers and birds; she and Dad would often sit outside and have coffee. Mom wore many hats over the years; she was a mother, telephone operator, housekeeper, Insurance agent and after she sold her Insurance Agency to Lynn, she helped Dad at the store. Mom and Dad also enjoyed traveling through the years, and lived in Bullhead City, Arizona for half a year for much of their retired life. As Mom would say, “Live life to the fullest, this day isn’t coming back!”
There will be a come and go (casual) Celebration of Life starting at 2:00 pm, July 9th at the Hogg farm (12362 TWP. RD 432 Sedgewick, Alberta.) for anyone who would like to stop by to share memories.
